Classical geometry is a branch of amthematics concernced with questions of shape, size, relative position of figures, and the properties of space. The mathematical branch of topology is a realtively new field of mathematicsm being essentially twentieth century mathematics. Thus, there are the research ares of algebraic topology, topological analysis, and geometric topology. This workshop will focus on the last. In particular, we will discuss how the topology of surfaces--closed compact 2-manifolds--determines the geometric structure that can be imposed upon the surface. We will then graduate to discussing the interplay between the topology and geometry of 3-dimensional spaces-3-manifolds. Click here for a full description.
